West Brownsville Borough is an historically important transportation nexus and a present-day borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States and part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. West Brownsville is a located in a bend of the Monongahela River covering 1.4 square miles with a population of approximately 975. The borough started as the western landing site for a ferry carrying settlers across the river.
West Brownsville has had a variety of industries, many centered around access to the Mon River, such as boat building, mining, glass manufacturing, lumber, and railroad.
Main Street is notable for featuring on-street running by freight trains down the center of the street. Considered one railroad crossing, it is one of the longest crossings in the United States.
Additionally, West Brownsville is the birthplace of James G. Blaine. He was appointed as Secretary of State under the Republican Party under President Benjamin Harrison (23rd President). He was also a United States Senator, and a member of the House of Representatives.
